This finely crafted statue depicts the fearsome deity Mahakala. As a part of Buddhism he is considered a fierce form of Vishnu and within the context of Hinduism he is considered the fierce form of Shiva and Vishnu together and is the consort of Mahakali. In terms of iconography, Mahakala can be shown in a variety of ways with differing aspects and symbolism however a very common feature is his crown of five skulls. Here he is shown in a six-armed form holding various ritual objects.
