Artisan Bhutanese Bhairab Mask No.343

This large, amazing carving depicts Bhairab (also known as Bhairava or Mahakala, ) a fierce aspect of the Hindu god Shiva. It has been hand made and painted by Newari artisans in Nepal and would traditionally be hung above doors and entranceways to be protective of a house or temple. Bhairab is often depicted with a crown of five skulls symbolising the transmutation of negative afflictions (greed, aggression, ignorance, pride and jealousy) into the five wisdoms. This kind of mask features frowning, angry eyes, sharp tiger teeth and sometimes flaming hair or coiled serpents; he is associated with annihilation and is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. Traditional dances with masks play an important role in traditional Tibetan culture and life, especially within Hinduism and Buddhism.
