Carved Sitting Buddha 80cm
About this product
This 80cm seated Buddha has been carefully and expertly hand carved on the island of Bali. Each of these incredible works of art is created from a solid piece of suar wood. When depicting Buddha, the positioning of the hands (Mudra) is very important and different mudra represent different things.
Here, Buddha is shown with his left hand in the Chin Mudra (the 'Consciousness Seal'), also known as the Gyan Mudra (the 'Knowledge and Wisdom Seal'). This represents the union of the individual soul (the index finger) and the supreme soul (the thumb), and it promotes stability in meditation and a sense of spiritual knowledge.
His right hand is in the Bhumisparsha Mudra (the 'earth-touching gesture') which holds deep symbolic meaning in Buddhism. It is the Mudra that Siddhartha Gautam held when he obtained enlightenment and became the Buddha. It represents him calling to earth to witness his triumph over temptation.
The position (Asana) for seated Buddhas is often this full lotus position with the feet resting on the thigh of the other leg and the soles facing upwards. This meditative asana is known as Dhyana Asana or Padmasana. As this item is both large and heavy, collection from our warehouse is preferred.
